A NOW MEANINGFUL LIFE
Chris was just a boy when he was first exposed to drugs and alcohol. His single mom was absent—only because she was working hard to provide a life for the two of them. Growing up in Section 8 housing in a gang-heavy, drug-infested neighborhood painted addiction as “normal” to Chris.
"My babysitters and neighbors would party. So I started doing what everyone else did—smoking and drinking."
It wasn’t until Chris was older and his mom passed that the grip of addiction tightened. "I started numbing," he says. "I didn’t want to feel the pain of her passing. I blew everybody off. My life spiraled." That spiral led to the streets.
"I remember the way people would look at me when I roamed the streets asking for help," says Chris. "I was so low in my life . . . losing myself in addiction."
"I don’t know how to describe the feeling of homelessness," says Chris. "It’s heartbreaking."
Desperate for any measure of safety and security, Chris began breaking into buildings for shelter—eventually landing himself in prison because of it. "I realized there was no way I could sustain that way of life, especially without food. My life was unbearable." Chris’s girlfriend—now fiancée—who graduated from CityTeam happened to call him in the darkest moment of his addiction. "If you think your life is unbearable, you should try this program," she told him.
ON THE PATHWAY TO RESTORATION
"I’m thankful I’m not on the destructive path I used to call life. I’m thankful I’m not behind cell doors. I’m thankful I have something to live for."
"And I’m really thankful for CityTeam," says Chris. "Without them, I’d be in prison or dead."
"It still surprises me how enjoyable life is, I feel like I have a meaningful life for the first time."
AN INDESCRIBABLE CHANGE
Today, Chris is thriving in a satisfying career as an installation tech and is taking steps toward becoming a CityTeam intern so he can champion other men so they can rise above homelessness and addiction. When Chris sees neighbors walking in the shoes he once walked in, his heart is moved to compassion.
"People don’t need a judging eye. They need love," he says.
Chris calls himself "dependable"—a word he never imagined he’d use to describe himself.
"I can’t even describe the change that’s happened in me," he says. "I’m sober. I have a career with a local company that I enjoy. I’m building a family."
"Thank you for saving my life."
